Steel wire rope Grommets, with fibre or IWR core, are widely used on offshore field and on heavy lifting.
The Grommet sling is made braiding 3 times the nominal diameter (e.g. a steel wire rope Grommet diameter 30 mm. is made braiding 3 times the steel wire rope diameter 10 mm.) and splicing the ropes’ ends to “tie” them together.
The big advantage of this type of slings is the possibility to reach very significant diameters manufacturing up to 180 mm., sizes that is not possible to reach with Sleeves’ swaging process and compared to the same soft eyes Slings’ diameters the Grommets’ WLL is impressively greater.
Even the Grommets can be manufactured with soft eyes, thanks to the seizing operation made with a small-diameter steel wire rope. The Grommets WLL, on ours technical tables, comply with European standards EN 13414-3 that considers the manufacturing of these slings with 6x36WS+IWRC steel wire rope with 1960 N/mm2 tensile strength.
It’s also possible to manage Grommets complying with IMCA 179 standards, which adopt a safety factor, referred to the helically braiding of the elementary steel wire rope, more unfavorable compared to the European standards.
The steel wire rope Grommets have a safety factor equal to 5 up to diameter 60 mm., over the diameter 60 mm. the safety factor decreases gradually.
