GUIDANCE ON HANDLING, PROPER USE AND MAINTENANCE OF
STEEL WIRE ROPE
- WITHOUT ANY TERMINATION, FREE ENDS
- WITH TERMINATIONS, SLINGS AND PENNANTS
- GROMMETS
NORMAL WORKING CONDITIONS
This specific lifting device should be used to lift loads according to the existing European and National standards exception made for the following limitations here listed
handling instructions
this specific lifting device must be used only by a competent person and for the following applications:
- steel wire rope ends free: to be used in combination with cranes and lifting devices only
- steel wire rope slings, penannts & grommets: together with their specific fittings and accessories to be used as connections between the crane and the load to be lifted
Particular care must be drawn in handling these products , it will be personnel’s duty to wear :
- gloves
- safety shoes
- safety glasses
the user should also check the steel wire rope and fitting conditions before any lifting operations ( to verify the presence of label and legibility of marking , lack of space among the wires , cutting, damaged wires, wear, deformation and general damages)
lifting capacity and various modes of use
the end user of the product should make reference to the Sirtef’s technical manuals in order to :
- fix the working load limit of the single steel wire rope sling or the assembly sling, pennant and grommet that is going to be used;
- be aware of the minimum breaking load of the wire rope;
- choose the proper mode of use in relation with the load that has to be lifted;
- select the correct lifting fittings suitable to be assembled with the steel wire rope sling or grommet;
- avoid asymmetrical stresses without the due precautions
particular care must be drawn on the correct way of coiling/uncoiling steel wire rope on drums/winches :

use in corrosive environment (chemical plants, offshore applications etc.)
If any steel wire rope is used in aggressive chemical conditions it can be that it suffers for corrosion and deterioration of its mechanical specifications; so the end user should duly considers:
- the interaction beetwen the working environment and the rope’s steel quality;
- the chemical interaction between the rope’s steel quality and the related lifting accessories;
- it is forbidden to modify the finishing of the rope by galvanising or other kind of plating without the previous manufacturer’s approval
- do not immerge the steel wire ropes in acids solutions
resistance to fatigue (steel wire rope with free ends)
any running steel wire rope is subject to fatigue and its deterioration could be caused by:
- wear
- mechanical damages
- bending fatigue
in order to prevent these possible damages we suggest to the end users to :
- to analyse the topic by reading the Sirtef technical catalogues
- to perform regular quarterly inspection the steel wire ropes (make reference to paragraph 16 of Sirtef “user and maintenance” catalogue) )
- to perform a magnetic-inductive test yearly
if you need further technical information about the use, working capacity, the different possible configurations,, inspection and maintenance, our “steel wire rope catalogue” is at your disposal for your convenience
