GUIDANCE ON HANDLING, PROPER USE AND MAINTENANCE OF
Short link chain for lifting purpose GRADE 80 - 100
- CHAIN WITH FREE ENDS
- CHAIN SLINGS
NORMAL WORKING CONDITIONS
This specific lifting device should be used to lift loads according to the existing European and National standards exception made for the following limitations here listed
handling instructions
this specific lifting device must be used only by a competent person and for the following applications:
- short link chain with free ends: to be used in combination with related lifting fittings only to assembly chain slings
- chain slings: together with their specific fittings and accessories to be used as connections between the crane and the load to be lifted
Particular care must be drawn in handling these products , it will be personnel’s duty to wear :
- gloves
- safety shoes
- safety glasses
the user should also check the chain and fitting conditions before any lifting operations ( to verify the presence of label and legibility of marking , cuts, nicks, cracks ,gouges, excessive corrosion, wear, deformation and general damages)
lifting capacity and various modes of use
the end user of the product should make reference to the Sirtef’s technical manuals in order to :
- fix the working load limit of the single chain sling or the assembly sling, that is going to be used;
- choose the proper mode of use in relation with the load that has to be lifted;
- select the correct lifting fittings suitable to be assembled with the chain sling ;
- avoid asymmetrical stresses without the due precautions
working temperature
Here below the room temperatures allowed for chain in working conditions and related efficiency factors:

use in corrosive environment (chemical plants, offshore applicationsetc.)
If any chain and component is used in aggressive chemical conditions it can be that it suffers for corrosion and deterioration of its mechanical specifications; so the end user should duly considers:
- the interaction between the working environment and the chain’s steel quality;
- the chemical interaction between the chain’s steel quality and the related lifting accessories;
- it is forbidden to modify the finishing of the chain by galvanising or other kind of plating without the previous manufacturer’s approval
- do not immerge the chain in acids solutions
thorough examination
A thorough examination should be carried out by a competent person at intervals not exceeding twelve months and this interval should be less where deemed necessary in the light of service condition. A proof load test equal to 1.5 times the SWL should be carried out once every two years. We recommend this test any time the chain sling is put under severe working conditions or it has been exposed to high temperatures . Records of such examinations should be maintained. .
